Yooperlite is a syenite rock rich in sodalite. The sodalite is what causes its distinctive orange fluorescence under UV light. (Fluorescence refers to the phenomenon where a material starts to emit visible light when exposed to, for example, UV radiation.) It was first discovered in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula in 2017, with its name derived from the local nickname “Yooper” for residents of the area.
