GEM BOX® Inkberry Holly

This looks for all the world like a little boxwood, but it’s actually an inkberry holly. This tidy evergreen is native to North America and it doesn’t have the issues that boxwood does. It behaves very similarly to boxwood, as it’ll also respond really well to shaping in late spring. Fortunately, trimming is seldom necessary, as its habit stays dense and handsome-looking so long as it is in consistently moist soil. You may not be able to bring yourself to snip anyway, as its new foliage flushes with handsome red color right at its tips early in the season. Its flowers will feed local pollinators and the resulting berries (when planted with a Squeeze Box® male holly) will feed wildlife.
