Light: Foliage needs to be exposed to a minimum of four hours of light. In cool, northern climates it will thrive in full sun. In warmer, southern climates it benefits from having a bit of afternoon shade. Anywhere it grows, it performs best when the soil surface above the roots is shaded. This can be accomplished with mulch or other plants.Soil: Absolutely needs to be well draining. Prefers fertile soil that is neutral or a bit alkaline. If your soil leans acidic, you can apply a little lime and check again in a year. Water: Average water needs, but really resents sogginess. Fertilizing: Average fertilizer needs – too much fertilizer can encourage abundant foliage production at the expense of the flowers. As such, applying a granular fertilizer in late winter/early spring when the soil is workable should be sufficient for the season. Pruning: Flowers on both old and new wood, so it is a very reliable bloomer. May be pruned back to 2′ in spring.
